Tranmere Hotel is alas no longer with us. It was closed in 1984 after some 50 years as one of Ilfracombe's finest private hotels. Originally comprised of a terrace of 3 elegant mid Victorian Houses, it flourished as seasonal accommodation for hundreds of families from all over the British Isles until the foreign package holiday and the universal need for car parking lead to its demise. Set in the centre of St. James Place between Capstone Hill and the Harbour, it enjoyed being the centre of attention.

We are unashamedly using our old friend to promote the latest in new Web Site technology and give prospective clients a full experience of what to expect from software developed by hoteliers themselves over the last 20 years. This is a family run hotel and we pride ourselves in providing a professional yet relaxed service, so you can just enjoy your holiday or business trip. All of our bedrooms have ensuite facilities with either baths or showers. Each room has a well-stocked minibar, colour TV/DVD , radio & CD player, hairdryer and beverage tray. Irons and laundry facilities are available by request. Our premium bedrooms have lovely views of the surrounding countryside and the sea.

A full and varied breakfast is included in the price and optional dinner is available if pre-ordered as well as a variety of packed lunches.

Children of all ages are welcome at a reduced rate if accompanied by two adults with cots provided on request. We have two suites comprising a double room with an interconnecting door to an adjoining twin bedded room which are particular favourites with families.

Most pets are welcome by prior arrangement at a small extra cost.

Tranmere Hotel has ample private car-parking in front of the hotel and is only a few minutes walk from the picturesque harbour and town’s excellent range of restaurants.

Within just a short drive, there are a variety of little rocky coves and miles of sandy beaches where you can enjoy safe bathing or world class surfing. Laston House is just a short distance from the coastal footpath and its magnificent views of the sea and country side. Cycling along the Tarka Trail is another great family treat and we are pleased to arrange hired bicycles to be delivered to the hotel if required. Details of organized walks on Exmoor and the surrounding district can be found at our local Tourist Information Centre.

Ilfracombe’s harbour is the centre of lots of boating, fishing and diving activities such as spectacular wildlife and coastal cruises aboard the ‘Ilfracombe Princess’ and diving off Lundy Island in the Marine Conservation Area. Comfortable cruises to Lundy Island are frequent aboard the MV ‘Oldenberg’ and during the summer, the paddle steamer ‘Waverley’ and motor yacht ‘Balmoral’ cruse along the North Devon and Welsh Coasts.

There is a fascinating range of stately homes and gardens open to the public in the North Devon Area as well as a number of wonderful Golf Courses that are always pleased to welcome visiting Golfers. Please let us know if we can help you further with any of these activities.
